LITERATURA NEGRA NO BRASIL

BLACK LITERATURE IN BRAZIL
Even though Brazilian Black Literature (also known as Afro-Brazilian Literature or Afrodescendant) has been gaining visible space in the academic discourse, it still finds restrictions when it comes to the Brazilian historiographical approach, which doesn’t see the specificity of black citizens’ discourses, as subjects of their own history in the scope of the national literary system. The black writer experiences life in a country that legitimates aesthetic paradigms through mechanisms which promote exclusion and racial discrimination. This literary branch, which was born outside of Africa but still incorporates cultural elements of African origin, stages an individual and collective subjectivity (an I - enunciator who is us) as a space of resistance and confrontation. It does so by revising and problematizing the univocal concept of national identity built from standards of an elite which is committed to the maintenance of white values. Going further than the author’s skin color or ethnic origins, black literature gives a new meaning to the concept of identity from difference, intending to imprint the identity marks of the black-Brazilian ethnic subject on a society guided by white values. This thematic dossier will receive papers that reflect from multiple theoretical and critical contributions on Brazil’s black literature in narrative, drama and poetry, such as: tradition, individual/collective memory, ancestry, identities, the legacy of diaspora, black female literature, the black individual as object and subject in literature, cultural hybridism and others.
